NUS Ignition Grants 2026
Opens 15 Jan 2026 09:00 AM (AEDT)
Deadline 9 Mar 2026 12:00 PM (AEDT)
Description

As strategic partners, the University of Sydney (Sydney) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) are committed to achieving impact through collaboration in research and education.

The Ignition Grants are an initiative to support researchers from Sydney and NUS to facilitate collaborative projects that develop multidisciplinary cutting-edge research to create academic and societal impact. These grants are designed to provide researchers, in particular early- and mid-career researchers, with the opportunity to work with our strategic partner in developing joint research projects.

In this round, up to four projects will be funded:

  • Each proposal must demonstrate a clear contribution to one of the following priority research themes:
    • Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering
    • Health and Biomedical Sciences
    • Sustainability and Urban Solutions
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum and Digital Technologies
  • Each project will have two teams led by Chief Investigators: one from Sydney and one from NUS.
  • Each successful proposal will receive up to AUD$25,000 from Sydney and up to SGD$20,000 from NUS.
  • It is expected that all funded projects will evolve into larger scale projects, sustained by leveraging external funding. Funded teams are expected to submit external grant applications (to the value of AUD $200,000) within 18 months and evidence of external funding submissions will be required in project final reports.
  • Projects which are multidisciplinary in nature or seek to address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are strongly encouraged.
  • Preference will be given to teams which include PhD or Masters by Research students, Postdocs, and Early- and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs), rather than one-to-one research projects. Preference is given to applications led by researchers within 10 years of receiving their PhD.
  • Priority will also be given to new projects and to applicants who have not previously received support under this scheme, in order to broaden participation and foster new collaborations.
